It?s South Africa 1990. Two major events are about to happen: The release of Nelson Mandela and, more importantly, it?s Spud Milton?s first year at an elite boys only private boarding school. John Milton is a boy from an ordinary background who wins a scholarship to a private school in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Surrounded by boys with nicknames like Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man and Mad Dog, Spud has his hands full trying to adapt to his new home. Along the way Spud takes his first tentative steps along the path to manhood. (The path it seems could be a rather long road). Spud is an only child. He is cursed with parents from well beyond the lunatic fringe and a senile granny. His dad is a fervent anti-communist who is paranoid that the family domestic worker is running a shebeen from her room at the back of the family home. His mom is a free spirit and a teenager?s worst nightmare?

In a Top Gear special, Jeremy, Richard and James are sent to Africa and each told to buy a second-hand car, which they must drive across the wilds of Botswana. Obstacles facing them include massive saltpans, treacherous rivers and reserves full of animals.

Fifty years ago there were close to half-a-million lions in Africa. Today there are around 20,000. To make matters worse...

How do we account for the many crises that Africa constantly faces? I've spent much of my life wrestling with that question and I attempt an answer in my new little book called The Betrayal of Africa. The book led to a 10 or 12 minute interview on CBC Radio's The Current recently, which in turn led to an entirely unexpected Citizen editorial ("Guilty indulgences," April 29). The writer generously called my "passion for peace and justice admirable," but criticized me for being too tough on the West's role in Africa and "conspicuously gentle on China."

Sudan is Africa’s largest country but has been strife with war for decades as has much of Africa. Muslims use to live side by side with their Arabian friends for centuries within the Darfur region but when great oil wealth was discovered this all changed for the worse. Sadly, Darfur has been characterized as a Rwanda going in slow motion and still, even to this day, little has been done to stem the tide of death and rape.
