This term, to mark our 10th Background Fundamentals, we've got a blockbuster in store for fxphd members. Throughout the term, we'll look at what it means to be a Visual Effects Supervisor. What are the pressures, the roles and how do you manage a large Hollywood film?

Background Fundamentals is the "required" course for fxphd members and covers a wide range of topics -- the fundamental building blocks of visual effects. This course is a great overview of the industry and deals with a different aspect everyweek.

With the release of Photoshop CS6, Adobe introduced the ability to edit video footage. Author Rich Harrington guides you through this brand-new workflow, from building a sequence to working with audio and exporting your video in a variety of high-quality formats. The course also covers how Photoshop's strongest feature, its image enhancement toolset, translates to video, from fixing under-or overexposed footage, performing color balancing, and adding vibrance and contrast to special effects, such as converting to black and white and using Smart Filters to soften skin.

In her career as an animator, Angie Taylor has developed some powerful techniques for creating quick but compelling 2D animation, and in this workshop she shares those secrets with you. You’ll learn how to import layered files and paths from Illustrator into After Effects and how to animate flat vector artwork in both 2D and 3D space, and you’ll explore options for outputting your animations. The videos are short, focused, and solution-oriented, and all the project files are included so you can follow along as you go.

Mark Christiansen builds upon his incredibly successful AFX220 class, by leading a team effort focusing on design-related issues in After Effects. Using the new After Effects CS3, we cover a wide range of topics, including design principles, interoperability with Photoshop and Illustrator, animation tricks, keying, and new features in CS3. Most of the course will be not specific to CS3 so you’ll be fine using older versions, but we’ll highlight changes in the app and cover some of the cool new features.

With After Effects Version 7's support for a 32-bit workflow, the application continues to make inroads into the compositing workflow. Our After Effects professor is Mark Christiansen, author of "After Effects Studio Techniques". Christiansen will provide intermediate users with insights on how to get the most of of the tools in a production environment -- breaking down many of the tools and showing the best way to use them in a production environment. We've been huge fans of Christiansen since his book first came out, as it shows techniques and approaches which are applicable across all platforms -- and helps users of other software packages feel right at home in After Effects.
